On a desktop, you can upgrade the video card, but this isn't possible on most portable computers. If you have numerous details to focus on, poor image quality makes it that much harder to concentrate on the task at hand. Improve image quality to reduce the fatigue associated with the additional eyestrain. 1. Check the screen resolution if the image quality changed recently. It is possible a different user, or even another program, altered the resolution without changing it back to its former state. Right-click the desktop, click "Screen Resolution" and scroll through the drop-down menu beside "Resolution." The setting you want says "Recommended" and matches the maximum resolution that your monitor supports. 2. Download updated drivers online that match the video card type and your operating system. Drivers are always being updated to improve performance and quality, among other things. Get the drivers directly from your laptop manufacturer's website whenever possible, because they are designed for your specific model. 3. Right-click the desktop, click "Personalize," "Display" and then "Adjust ClearType text." Place a check beside "Turn on ClearType" and click "Next" to proceed. The screens that follow walk you through the process of adjusting your screen to improve the readability of text. Most of the time you will determine which boxes contain the sharpest text, until the wizard finalizes your choices. 4. Increase the detail level in your graphics card control panel if the poor quality occurs while playing games or using 3D applications. Your video card has primary control of the images you see and can be changed to favor Quality over Performance. In Nvidia, look under "Manage 3D Settings" and change Texture Filtering to "Quality." A similar option for ATI/AMD cards is found under "Level of Detail." 5. Use an external monitor, if possible. External monitors are particularly useful for expanding your workspace, especially if your laptop's screen measures less than 15 inches. Although it won't affect your laptop's built-in LCD screen, you'll improve your overall image quality if you use an external monitor that has a higher resolution than your laptop.
